Raise your hand if you were tired of hearing me say "the 501c3 is on its way!" Around September, I decided not to go to another meeting until I could say, "We got it!" Well, we got it. In October 2007 the Hyde Park Suzuki Institute received its federal not for profit status, which means that donations are tax deductable to the extent allowed by law. This includes all contributions made to HPSI since August 2006. This also means that we now qualify to apply for grants and other funding opportunities that were not available to us before.
This begins another exciting phase in our development. Our music school is a pre-teen. In 2008 we will celebrate 10 years of excellence in the Hyde Park Community. We will celebrate all year long starting with the 2nd Annual Gala that is tentatively scheduled for May 2, 2008, our Japan 2008 trip in July, our very first HPSI summer camp workshop and many other activities to celebrate your success. We have several families that have been with the school for a very long time. These key people will be recognized at our finale concert and reunion in December 2008.
Our community is closely-knit for several reasons. One reason is that space is an issue and we can't help but to be close. I am happy to announce that we will be using additional large spaces in the UCHP beginning in January. We can now spread out, but keep the fun going!
I think that's enough. Now go practice.

HPSI STUDENTS EAGER TO PRACTICE 100 DAYS IN A ROW

HPSI students of all ages will promise to practice 100 days in a row in a ceremony on January 12, 2008. This is the third year for the 100 Day Club which was started as a way to motivate students to practice every day. This year the 100 Day Club will run from January 12, 2008 to April 21, 2008. For all their hard work, a recital will take place on April 26, 2008 to celebrate the hours of practice.
Parents and community members are needed to support this effort. They can participate by donating gifts that will be awarded to students after successful completion of 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 75 days of practice. Please contact Executive Director Lucinda Ali at 773-643-1388 if you would like to help.
Last year seventeen students performed after some 1,600 hours of practice combined. To honor them violinist Rachel Barton Pine visited the recital. She told the children that once you practice every day it becomes part of your routine. After these words of encouragement, she performed Bach's Prelude from Partita No. 3 in E Major and Ysa˙e's Sonata No. 2.
Daily practice is an integral part of the learning process. Music is no exception. It requires discipline and hard work.
Fee per student- $10. Includes calendar, stickers, silicone wristband (as a practice reminder) prizes, certificate of completion. Students must present their completed calendar or a photocopy to redeem prizes.

Congratulations to the Barberousse family who welcomes their new son. Born December 2007. Mom and baby are fine. He is nursing well. Lionel survived with all but two dreadlocks he lost during the last 10 minutes of the pushing phase of the delivery.
Lionel and Imani thank everyone for the well wishes, thoughts and prayers. If you'd like to assist them in any way, please bring ready-to-eat fruit for the family.
