Traditional Instruction

Private

Guitar (Children 3 years old and older) Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced

Students learn fundamentals of guitar in a wide range of styles, including jazz, blues, classical and folk. 

30 minute private lesson and group class  $510.00
45 minute private lesson and group class  $630.00
60 minute private lesson and group class  $750.00


Students purchase their own materials.


Harp (Children 4 years old and older) Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced
Students learn harmony/theory skills and fundamentals of harp performance in various styles which may include classical, jazz, contemporary and religious.


30 minute private lesson and group class  $510.00
45 minute private lesson and group class  $630.00
60 minute private lesson and group class  $750.00

Students purchase their own materials. Harps available for rent and/or purchase.

Second Instrument
Students with years of study on their primary instrument may study a second instrument to enhance the their overall musical knowledge and experience.  Students must be enrolled at HPSI for their primary instrument.  Students should discuss their desire to study a 2nd instrument with their instructor. Students are encouraged to attend group class but are not required to.

Student must provide their own instruments and purchase their own materials.  Participation in group classes is encouraged but not required.

 

Adult Lessons
Since you are "never too old to twinkle," we offer instruction in violin, viola, cello, piano, guitar, harp, composition and improvisation. Program includes weekly private lessons and a performance at the end of the term.

Composition (Children)   
Students learn the fundamental concepts of music theory: melody, rhythm, harmony, musical structure and form, analysis and composition.  Alex Wing, Instructor.

Improvisation (Children)   
Students learn jazz improvisation techniques, jazz theory and rhythm on the student's choice of instrument.

Classes

Classes are 50 minutes, 4 student minimum, $150 and open to the public
Classes may be cancelled for low attendance or insufficient funding. 

Introduction to Theory (Twinklers and Book 1 Students, any instrument)

HPSI enrolled students: $100. Non-HPSI students: $150
In this 12-week class, games and singing and theory puzzles combine to lay the foundation for a deeper musical understanding and eventual music reading. Done in typical Suzuki-fashion, musical ideas are experienced first-hand, then named and notated. Students explore melody, rhythm, and are introduced to notation and the staff.
Fall Term, Mondays at 6:00 pm


Theory Level 1 (Books 2 and up, any instrument)

HPSI enrolled students: $100. Non-HPSI students: $150
This class is aimed to prepare students to take the ABRSM Theory Level 1 exam. Participating students must have begun note-reading in their private lessons. It covers note values (whole, half, quarter, eighth and sixteenth), ties and dots, along with simple time signatures, composition exercises, treble and bass clefs. It also covers sharps, flats, naturals, and the C, G, D, and F scales with their triads, degrees, and intervals. Non-piano students will learn basic piano skills as part of their theory instruction.
Fall Term, Saturdays at 10:00 am

String Reading Orchestra (Books I-II String Players)  $150
Designed for students who are at levels end of Book I through Book III for their stringed instrument, this class will focus on strengthening note reading and theory for violin, viola, and cello students. Students will play fun music, learning along with friends.
